Hello, I am Rosa and I’m the proud owner of Rosy’s Salon in East Palo Alto. I have been in the beauty business for more than 20 years. I remember, as a little girl, walking by hair salons and stopping in wonder at the men and women who would cut and style hair.
I started my career in Mexico, where I studied to be a stylist and worked for two years. I moved to Los Angeles when I was a young woman and became certified as a beautician at the Pacific Beauty College. After a few years I moved to East Palo Alto. I have been in the Bay Area for the last 23 years – it is my home now.
My road to StartUp has had several twists and turns. When I first moved to EPA I worked in different beauty salons in the surrounding area. I decided to open up my own shop, which at the time was the first Latino-owned beauty salon in the neighborhood. I ran my business for 14 great years until I decided to move out of the Bay Area to try to dedicate more time to my 3 boys who were in need of parental guidance. After two years, we came back to EPA because we missed the community and camaraderie in the area.
By the time we moved I had gone through a lot of ups and down – I decided to look to StartUp for a lift up. It was exactly what I needed! I went through the business courses and found the motivation I needed to start all over again. I derive personal satisfaction in having each and every client walk out of my shop feeling better about themselves through the care we have given them.
